A prototype is not just a sample, but a series of decisions
Creating a knitwear prototype is not as simple as saying: “Here is a sketch and a moodboard, please choose the yarn and make a sample.” It is a development process that involves a series of technical and material decisions.
During the production preparation stage, dozens of questions arise. And it is always better to answer them early — before the style goes on the knitting machine.
This is why clear designer–manufacturer communication is so important at this stage.
For example:
- is the yarn selected by the designer suitable for the knitting machine?
- should the knitted structure be tighter or more relaxed?
- how should we interpret a stitch pattern that is only visible in a low-quality reference photo?
- should the buttonholes be knitted directly on the machine or finished later using a traditional buttonhole machine?
- can we use yarn that is two shades darker if the requested colour will not be available for several weeks?
- how should the garment be finished after washing — should the handle be softer and smoother, or more classic and natural?
There are many more questions like this. Some of them may seem like small details, but if they are not clarified, they can create serious problems later in the process. These are the questions a knitwear technologist asks while developing a prototype. Experience helps in many cases. But sometimes you either have to guess… or go back to the designer for clarification.
This is not about keeping the designer and the factory on a constant hotline. In reality, there is often no time for ongoing consultations, and too many ad hoc decisions can easily lead to mistakes.
How can this be organized?
In our work, we rely on two main tools: standardization and swatches.

Standardization
During the initial discussion with the designer, we try to define everything that can be standardized, for example:
- garment measurements
- types of ribs
- construction details
- finishing methods for specific elements, such as buttonholes
- basic yarn requirements
Most parameters can be agreed in advance. But not all of them.
Swatches
When a decision is difficult to describe in words, swatches help.
If we are not sure:
- what gauge or density the designer prefers
- what handle is expected
- how a more complex stitch structure should look
swatches allow these decisions to be made in a clear and tangible way.
The result?
If, before starting the prototype, we have:
- a standardized product specification
- and material and aesthetic decisions based on approved swatches
then around 98% of the final product parameters are already known.
The remaining 2% can usually be clarified during the process with a short email or a quick conversation.
And in most cases, that is enough.
Why does this method work?
- most decisions are made at the beginning of the process
- standardization reduces the risk of overlooking important details
- instead of guessing, we work from clear agreements and physical samples
It shifts the process from reactive to planned.

Why is designer–manufacturer communication important?
From our perspective, good communication means:
- a calmer workflow for the technologist
- fewer mistakes at the prototype stage
- stronger trust between the designer and the manufacturer
- fewer corrections, which means lower costs
- a better understanding of the designer’s intention
- a higher chance of approving the prototype for production faster
The conclusion is simple:
Good communication is not an extra step in the process.
It is part of quality — both in the prototype and in the final product.
