1990-2000

Mariusz and Anna Kurczewski, still students at the Lodz University od Technology, opened a knitting shop. Initially, they operated out of their children’s room and later moved to a garage on Grunwaldzka Street in Lodz. On the fence, they hung a board with a proud inscription: “MACHINE KNITTING”.

They handled the production themselves using manual machines. After a few months, electric machines and the first employees appeared.

In the following years, they changed the location several times due to the constantly increasing demand for space for the constantly growing plant. To meet the enormous demand of the 1990s, the company continually bought new machines and increased the number of employees. „…We buy machines from bankrupt cooperatives and production plants left over from the previous system. We hire professionals from those factories, learn knitting and business…” – they jointly recall the beginnings.

2001-2010

The turn of the century found them flourishing. Several dozen people were working, producing knitwear products for local, national, and European clothing brands. To meet the growing expectations of their customers, they completely replaced their old machines with newer, computer-controlled ones. „…Previously, we used to program the machines with punched cards, cut out by hand, which is mid-20th century technology…”

Successfully growing the company for 15 consecutive years, they had no idea that hard times might come, but they did. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the majority of large customers moved production to the Far East. Those who remained were often in poor financial condition and in trouble.

They responded to the decrease in orders by establishing their own clothing brand, FAR FAR. They built a new brand in the minds of their customers from scratch and within three years, gained customers all over Poland. They compensated for the lower demand for knitting from external customers by producing for their own brand.

2011-2020

The second decade of the 21st century saw the continued development of the company’s own clothing brand and stable knitwear production. In the second half of the decade, a small (but still noticeable) return to domestic production occurred. Many brands wanted to have at least part of their collections labeled “Made In Poland.” It seemed that the situation was stabilizing. It only seemed so because the beginning of 2020 brought new challenges.

COVID 19 pandemic, production stoppage, high uncertainty. “…We use the temporary halt in knitting production to invest in the production of specialist protective clothing for medical services. We learn new things, get certificates. Of course we also sew the famous “cotton masks”, but we concentrate on protective clothing. By the end of the year we will have supplied medical units with over 200,000 pieces of specialist clothing…”

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…” – In Gutek, you’ll see virtually all the traits of his parents, but you’ll also see how, despite everything, he’s very different from them. Our Programmers. Girls are our “eyes in the head” without their design skills and ability to translate the idea into knitting pattern, such beautiful products would not be created.

An unusual duo. Marek – Head of Logistics Department. Without his approval nothing is ever able to leave the walls of our company. Darek – our “golden handyman” – the guy for special tasks. He takes care of the impossible things right away.
